Education and conservation has always been at the forefront with the Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS). The educational component at BZS has gone to the next level with a new floating classroom. In 2008, Endurance Specialty Insurance sponsored the new 45-foot – long Endurance. How many children have had the opportunity to experience the Endurance and what can one expect to learn on one of your voyages?
Endurance has given us a whole new realm of Educational possibilities. Since September 2008, when the boat arrived, we have taken over 400 teachers and students out for educational experiences ranging from tours on isolated island nature reserves, to ocean chemistry classes, to snorkelling trips led by coral researchers. We are offering a number of fantastic educational experiences including whale watching, snorkelling, turtle study, and glow-worm expeditions. Students young and old have learned to appreciate our island home.
Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ) is a state of the art facility with not only animals from above and below the water, BAMZ also has a great interactive library. Please tell us what the library and museum offers in terms of the history that is Bermuda?
| The BAMZ library’s core collection focuses on Bermuda’s natural history, terrestrial and marine, but also focuses on zoo animal husbandry and island ecology, as well as some of the broader environmental issues affecting Bermuda today. Subjects such as biodiversity, global warming, invasive species and sustainable development have all become areas of interest during the last few years, and we have been building a resource of relevant materials on these subjects. The BAMZ library is a wonderful resource which is available to the entire community. Please contact our Librarian, Alison Green, to make an appointment to visit the library. | The new cruise ship terminal (Heritage Wharf) in Dockyard was treated with “green” gloves. BAMZ/BZS took on the responsibility of making sure that the reef wasn’t mishandled in any way. The reef system was transplanted before the dredging started. This is a first for Bermuda! Please elaborate on this delicate project and how the reef has adapted to the new location? |
The BREAM, Bermuda Reef Ecosystem Assessment and Monitoring Programme, at BZS is a scientific research and conservation team who are dedicated to collecting and sharing critical information to guide the best management of Bermuda’s marine resources. In March, BREAM worked with the Department of Conservation Services to transplant corals from a derelict barge located near the new Heritage Wharf, and transplant them to a nearby coral reef that would benefit from restoration. The transplantation was successful and BREAM continues to monitor the health of the corals at their new home. This summer BREAM will be surveying over 50 sites around the outer reefs of Bermuda, which will shed new light on the condition of the corals and fishes over these vital marine habitats.
