Depicted on the August cover, The Bermuda Train Company has been showcasing our beautiful island to thousands of visitors and locals alike. The train has a number of private tours that include: weddings, summer camps, birthday parties, corporate events and much more. Please outline for our readers the experience that can be had involving children and education.
The Bermuda Train Company (a subsidiary of Oleander Cycles Limited) has been in operation since the beginning of 1999. We recently had a private charter for one of the local schools who were studying the old Bermuda Railway. Our experienced driver, Mr. Sidney Simmons, took them along the North Shore Road pointing out the route of the Bermuda Railway and showing the children where a bridge once stood in Flatt’s Village. He also explained the entire route in which the train travelled, bringing along pictures to show the children what the train actually looked like. The feedback that we received was that the children were truly fascinated and went home at the end of the day telling their parents what they had learned and informed their parents of facts that they themselves were not aware.
Please tell This Week what a passenger can expect on your famous City of Hamilton train tour?
As you sit back in the train you are automatically transported back in time. Our Hamilton tour highlights such aspects as City Hall, the House of Parliament, the Bermuda Cathedral, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, and Botanical Gardens. You will learn how a house is built in Bermuda, including details like how we catch the rainwater on our roofs and store it in our tanks, which are located either beside or underneath the houses.
The Royal Naval Dockyard is celebrating its 200th Anniversary in 2009. Please elaborate on your Dockyard tour.
Our Dockyard tour is steeped with naval history as you learn about the Royal Naval Cemetery, the Royal Navy hospital, the Clock Tower Building, the Bermuda Maritime Museum and Somerset Village. Guests will hear all about the epidemic of yellow fever in Bermuda together with information on Bermuda’s largest fort and how life and commerce was back in the 1800’s.
