About Fine Cusine and Famous Guests at the Princess
By Horst Augustinovic

Since its opening, the Princess Hotel has been known for fine cuisine, professional service and genuine hospitality.
Leo Tworoger, assistant manager in 1890 and manager until 1940, took particular pride in the hotel’s dining and entertainment facilities.

As word got out, celebrities started to appear at the Princess. Mark Twain, America’s best known author and a regular at the hotel, would smoke cigars on the veranda while reciting poetry to groups of adoring fans. He was also known to frequent the billiard room. A statue of the famous author now resides in the main lobby of the hotel.

In 1920 HRH Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, visited the hotel and 50 years later Prince Charles help celebrate Bermuda’s 250th Anniversary of Parliament at the Princess Hotel.

Over the years other famous guests included Ian Fleming, who is said to have used the fish tank lined Gazebo Bar as the motif in his novel Dr. No. Other celebrities included three-time World Heavyweight Champion Mohamed Ali and legendary soccer player Pele.
